School For Excellence Student Video Project

One To World’s Global Classroom students at School For Excellence worked together on a video project that would reflect their Global Classroom experience. 10^th graders at School For Excellence meet Global Guides from Brazil, China, Mexico, Kenya, Nigeria, and Russia this year. They interviewed one another and Global Guides to learn about their Global Classroom experience. Students and Global Guides shared what they learned from each other and expressed interest in discovering more about each others cultures.

Global Classroom students share their work at the Holiday Sneak Peak program at PS308 in Brooklyn. Here is what they had to say about the program-

“In Global Classroom we learn about different places around the world. We have people from different countries come to our school to tell us about their country. Then they show us the different games that they play in their country. We play their games and then we show them a game that we play in our country.” – Tanequa Armstrong

Students Act Out Their Roles As Global Citizens

Students at the School For Excellence worked together to act out their roles as Global Citizens. Students acted out scenarios where they would use their cultural awareness and knowledge gained from Global Guides to communicate with others in the future. In their skits students deconstructed stereotypes and spoke of becoming global reformers to help others throughout the world.

Newcomers Students Learn Interview Skills

Seniors at Newcomers prepare for graduation next and entrance into college and the workforce by learning career skills in our Global Careers and Education program. Students learn how to apply for jobs, create resumes, and prepare for interviews.

Below, students list some basic “do’s and don’ts” for interviews.

So, you are running late because the bus got stuck in a traffic jam. You already have the address and phone number of the interview location, so you call AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and tell the receptionist you are running 10-15 minutes late and explain your situation.

You research the goals and accomplishments about the company and explain to the interviewer how they align with your goals and skills.

BEFORE the interview, you prepare answers to a list of possible questions the interviewer may ask you and you rehearse with a friend or family member.

You greet the interviewer with a firm handshake.

DON’T

Interview starts at 2pm. You arrive at 1:55pm and then go to the bathroom to freshen up for a few minutes.

You spray on a lot of cologne or perfume because you want to smell extra nice.

You’re a little rude or cold to the receptionist because he/she doesn’t really matter in the interview process.

You chew gum because you’re worried your breath might smell bad.

During the interview, you say: “I left my old job because my boss was a jerk and wouldn’t promote me.”

Jamaican Fulbright Scholar Engages Students at PS 308

Loraine and Carol spent the afternoon teaching students at PS308 about the history of Jamaican national symbols, the local language-Patois, the game and song- Manuel Road; A passing game, tracing the cultural and historical roots back to West Africa.
